Our food and digestion are not only the substances that we find on a plate. Foods can be any substance that we consume and digest.
According to Merriam-Webster dictionary the most common definition is; material consisting essentially of protein, carbohydrate, and fat used in the body of an organism to sustain growth, repair, and vital processes and to furnish energy. A secondary definition though is something that nourishes, sustains, or supplies food for thought. When we look at health and food from an integrative perspective it is this secondary definition that is important.
As part of my book, I shared that primary food is the kind of food that does not come on a plate. It consists of more complex elements, such as love, an exciting project, spirituality, or high self-esteem. When we experience an imbalance of any of these it can bring harm to ourselves. This harm causes similar effects in the body like when we eat processed foods.
Secondary food is the physical form of food that we consume. When we work towards consuming whole foods that provide true nourishment, we will have energy and vitality. The healthier you eat, the fewer cravings you will have for processed foods.
A big part of our health is tied to our digestion as well. The Merriam-Webster definition has to do with the physical - the process of making food absorbable by mechanically and enzymatically breaking it down into simpler chemical compounds in the digestive tract. Again, though think about your mental digestion.
There are many things going on in the world and our minds are inundated with messages that can be full of doom and gloom. Are you mentally digesting these messages? Take some time to review all the information you are hearing, seeing, and sensing. It may be time to put down the phone and turn off the television to allow your mind to rest.
There have been recent studies to show that the simple act of walking barefoot outdoors can have a profound effect on the body. Allowing your body to digest Earth’s natural electric charge can help stabilize the physiology. People have experienced a reduction in inflammation, pain, and stress, they have also seen improvements in energy and sleep.
Discover which primary foods are missing in your life. How can you make room for joy and satisfaction? As mentioned above the changes you make don’t have to be big. Any small step that you take to support your mind and body will have an impact.
When you can identify the imbalances, it will help you understand ways to spend more time and energy to create primary food balance. It may surprise you when you are experiencing positive emotional things in life it will lead to clear secondary food choices. Every step leads to an ideal weight and lifestyle.
